Popular Latin Dances That Are Fun to Learn - Our Guide

Updated: May 18

Dance is integral to Latin culture. From South and Central America and the Caribbean come a variety of dances with passionate rhythms and captivating flair that leave people wanting to watch more or even learn the dance themselves. But when it comes to Latin dances, a lot of people are only familiar with only a handful of types. They are usually only familiar with cha-cha-cha, rumba, and salsa.

If you'd like to learn more about Latin dances beyond the popular ones, below are the other types that are just as invigorating to watch and just as fun to learn.

Cha-cha-cha

Starting with arguably the most famous dance type, Cha-cha-cha, also known as cha cha, is a dance that is originated from Cuba. The name was derived from the sound of the dancers' shoes make when executing a move. With this dance, you'll only need to do the basic movement of stepping forward and backward, while shifting weight between your feet. When you do them repeatedly in quick succession, you count the steps as "cha cha cha."

Rumba

Also hailing from Cuba, the mambo involves a signature move that requires the dance to complete a 3-peat step moving forward and then backward, shifting weight between feet. This dance needs two people, where one partner goes backward while the other moves forward. It's also characterized by a hip-swaying action.

Mambo

Also hailing from Cuba, the mambo involves a signature move that requires the dance to complete a 3-peat step moving forward and then backward, shifting weight between feet. This dance needs two people, where one partner goes backward while the other moves forward. It's also characterized by a hip-swaying action.

Salsa

Another incredibly popular Latin dance is the salsa, which is born in the Caribbean. It's one of the most entertaining acts to watch due to the quick movements involved. It's usually done by two people, executing a 4-beat combination with two quick steps and a slow step. While it's simple in theory, it can be complicated when you add extra footwork and other elements that can make the performance more captivating.

Samba

A Brazilian dance that is related to the music of the same name, the Samba is known for its high energy vibe and quick steps. A dance type that can be performed either by an individual or a couple, it's characterized by its simple forward and backward steps and rhythmic hip movements. But the best part is the creative costumes the dancers wear while executing the moves.

Bachata

Hailing from the Dominican Republic is the bachata, which is characterized by the bachata guitar movement. Dancers move in a 4-beat pattern side to side, focusing their movement on the hips. Unlike other dances that are particular about the steps, bachata is more about moving your body to the beat than following a routine.
